T-Minus 3 Days: I'm Heading to Kennedy Space Center for the Roman Telescope Launch

Three days from now, a Falcon Heavy is going to light up the Florida sky. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be on top of it. And I'll be at Kennedy Space Center watching it happen.

I got selected for the NASA Social for this launch. That means credentialed access behind the ropes, up close to the hardware and the people who built it. I've been following space missions from the outside for years. This weekend I finally get to be on the inside.

Why Roman is a Big Deal

Roman isn't just another space telescope. The way I think about it: Hubble taught us to look closer. Webb taught us to look further back in time. Roman is going to teach us to look wider than we ever have.

Its field of view is more than 100 times larger than Hubble's. One Roman image covers what Hubble would need hundreds of separate pointings to capture. That changes the pace of discovery in a fundamental way.

Here's what the mission is actually going after:

• Over 100,000 new exoplanets, including rogue planets with no host star, found through gravitational microlensing
• Dark energy research at a scale that could finally tell us why the universe's expansion keeps speeding up
• A coronagraph instrument that blocks starlight to directly image planets and planet-forming disks, something that's never really been done from space before

This is one of those missions people are going to be referencing for decades.

What It Means for Sprouts From Space

Getting to stand at the Cape for this one feels like the full circle moment for that idea.
